Our aim is that, through the teaching of Geography, we develop global citizens who are knowledgeable and responsible for the world around them. Our children will be equipped to embrace and navigate an increasingly interconnected world. We endeavour to ignite curiosity, broaden horizons, and cultivate a sense of wonder about the diverse cultures and people that make up our planet. Children are given opportunities to explore geography in imaginative and innovative ways. By incorporating hands-on activities, fieldwork, and the use of technology, we encourage students to think creatively, critically analyse data, and propose alternative solutions. We recognise the richness of human experiences and celebrate the diversity of cultures, environments, and perspectives across the globe. Thus, fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the rich tapestry of humanity. We empower them to tackle global issues and make positive contributions to their communities and the world, nurturing their ambition to create meaningful change. |
In Foundation Stage, our geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and develop a sense of place and exploration. We introduce our youngest learners to basic geographical concepts, such as maps, directions, and the physical features of their local environment. Through hands-on activities, sensory experiences, and outdoor exploration, we encourage them to observe and make connections to the world around them. We provide opportunities for imaginative play, where children can create their own maps, explore different environments, and engage with diverse cultures through stories and songs. By nurturing their natural curiosity and fostering a love for exploration, we lay the foundation for future geographical learning. In Key Stage 1, we continue to build upon the early geographical experiences and develop a deeper understanding of the world. Children explore a range of local and global environments, learning about different continents, countries, and cultures. Through interactive discussions, visual resources, and engaging activities, we encourage students to appreciate the diversity of landscapes, climates, and people around the world. We provide opportunities for hands-on experiences, such as creating simple fieldwork investigations, to ignite their curiosity and deepen their understanding of geographical concepts. In Key Stage 2, our geography curriculum becomes more in-depth and focused, fostering a broader understanding of the world and its interconnectedness. Students explore a wide range of geographical topics, including population, climate change, ecosystems, and cultural diversity. They develop their map skills, using atlases, digital mapping tools, and satellite imagery to investigate landscapes, natural resources, and land use patterns. Through fieldwork opportunities, students engage in hands-on data collection and analysis, honing their geographical skills and understanding of fieldwork techniques. They develop a sense of place by studying significant geographical locations and their impact on communities. We encourage critical thinking and decision-making skills, enabling students to analyse complex issues and propose sustainable solutions to global challenges. |
Geography fosters a broad understanding of physical and human geography, from the local area to the wider world. We promote cultural competence and empathy through embracing diversity and inspire ambition and resilience to tackle global challenges. At Roade Primary School we study Geography as part of our continuous provision within EYFS. Geography is then studied in autumn term 2, spring term 2 and summer term 1 for one lesson per week throughout years 1 to 6. |
